Biography |
I am a freelance journalist specialising in travel and outdoor writing for newspapers, magazines, books and tourism/conservation organisations. I have been a full-time journalist since 1990. Having started my career as a reporter on local newspapers, I moved on to edit a business-to-business magazine and then went back into regional newspapers as a sub-editor on busy evening titles. I abandoned the constraints of a desk job to go travelling in Asia and New Zealand in 2001, and, on my return, I decided to focus my energies on the activities I love most – hill-walking, writing, travelling and photography. I have been freelance ever since. |
|
Main professional activities |
I am a regular contributor to Lakeland Walker magazine and TGO. I also write a weekly walking column for three newspapers in north Cumbria and a monthly outdoor advice column for an evening title. I contribute regular travel features and restaurant reviews as well as occasional road tests for The Cumberland News and the News & Star. I have also had travel and outdoor features published in The Sydney Morning Herald, Scanorama (SAS’s inflight magazine), The Scotsman and several other publications.
I was editor/compiler of TripAdvisor’s Summer Travel Guides (2006) for the Amalfi Coast, Cote D’Azur, London, Sydney, Hong Kong and Paris.
I do a lot of work for conservation and tourism bodies, researching and writing walks leaflets and interpretation panels. My clients in this area have included Scottish Natural Heritage, North Pennines AONB, Eden Rivers Trust and East Cumbria Countryside Project.
I continue to maintain my skills on the production side of journalism by designing and sub-editing a monthly farming title in Cumbria.
