Biography Writer and journalist for 35 years. Lives in south London, educated at Dulwich College and University College, Oxford; married with two children and four grandchildren. Spent 15 years on Sunday Times, now freelance. Has travelled widely and has written a dozen books. Often works in partnership with wife, Leni (qv), covering a wide range of subjects as well as outdoor topics. A keen hillwalker; completed The Munros in 1998.
